WinTopo not only runs under the various Microsoft Windows operating systems,
it also runs under Linux using the fantastic Wine API.
Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X-Windows and Linux/Unix.
Wine does not require Microsoft Windows,
as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code.
Installing and running WinTopo under Linux is a simple 3 step process:
- Download and install Wine from http://www.winehq.org
- Download the WinTopo installer from our download page
and enter "wine setup-wintopo.exe" at a command prompt.
The installer will appear.
Follow the instructions, but don't run WinTopo at the end (it won't work until you've done step 3).
- Download mfc42.dll into the WinTopo installation folder (should be "/Program Files/SoftSoft/WinTopo" within your Wine C-Drive)
|
You can then run WinTopo Freeware or WinTopo Professional from the desktop icons which appeared during step 2.
We have tested WinTopo Freeware and WinTopo Pro running on Fedora Linux.
Our tests show that all significant WinTopo features work correctly.
- Image processing functions and vectorisation work just as fast as under microsoft Windows.
- Image rendering (panning and zooming, etc.) appears to be a little slower than under Windows, due to the X-Window system not using the graphics card directly. This may be configurable.
- Operations that link to a web broswer window, do not actually invoke the web broswer. This is a very minor inconvenience.
- Control of scanning devices via the TWAIN interface, has not yet been tested.
- Loading of very large images appears to be slower due to the differences between the microsoft windows memory manager and the linux memory manager. This may be configurable.
